FOPP, the Scottish record shop which grew from a market stall in Glasgow to become Britain's biggest independent music retailer, closed down yesterday, putting up to 1,000 jobs at risk. After a fortnight of operating on a cash-only basis, the company issued a brief statement saying that, with "great regret", it was closing, thanking staff and customers for their support. The company has since been placed in administration, with Ernst Young now assessing the business.
